1. Stroke of Intake


The intake valve opens and the piston descends during the intake stroke. As a result, fuel and air can be drawn into the combustion chamber by the engine.

The fuel-air mixture is drawn in by the vacuum created when the piston descends.

2. Stroke by Compression


The piston then rises within the cylinder. In order to get the fuel-air combination inside the combustion chamber ready for ignition, this compresses it.

At the beginning of the compression stroke, the intake valve closes.

 3. The Stroke of Power


Combustion results from the spark plug igniting the fuel-air mixture at the peak of the compression stroke. The engine is powered by the energy from combustion, which pushes the piston downward.

4. Stroke of Exhaustion

The exhaust valve finally opens during the exhaust stroke, at which point the piston rises once more and forces the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder.

The wasted gases can leave the combustion chamber when the exhaust valve opens.
The cycle is finished when the piston rises to release the exhaust gases.
